Where is your dojo?
The dojo currently holds class at the Makiki District Park, 1527 Ke’eaumoku St. Beginning June 2nd, 2025, we will have a second location at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i.
What should we bring to a trial class?
Karate sometimes requires movements that require flexibility, so we recommend clothing that is easy to move in, as well as water.
Are we allowed to observe a class?
We encourage everyone to participate at the level of their comfort. Class observations are always welcome! Contact us beforehand on our contact page.
Does your dojo do sparring?
As is common in all Kyokushin dojo, kumite, or sparring, is a core requirement of our style, and our instructor has had a foundation in tournament fighting. That being said, while we seek to develop a core competency in sparring, no one is pushed beyond their level and injury prevention is a critical element to proper kumite instruction at our dojo.
What equipment is needed to do karate?
You will want to purchase a dogi, as well as sparring gear. For children, leg supporters, gloves, and helmets are required. For adults, leg supporters and gloves are required, and helmets are optional. Both children and adults may elect to wear a mouth guard or cup for sparring as desired. Dogi are required for indoor lessons for students, but athletic wear is OK for outside classes.
What kind of special events does your dojo plan?
This year, we are planning our first testing, as well as our first annual end of the year ceremony. We will also begin 2024 with our annual kagami-biraki.
