From the instructor
Hi there! I’m Ryan Layman. I’ve been training in martial arts for well-over twenty years. I have experience in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Judo, Kendo, Tai Chi, boxing, and finally settled on Kyokushin Karate, which I’ve been doing since 2010.
Kyokushin was a good choice for me because I was looking for something both traditional yet practical at the time. I’ve competed internationally, including at the So-Kyokushin World Championship in 2016. I also speak Japanese, and have done so for over 21 years.
While Kyokushin has a reputation for rigorous training, I have a background in education, and have a curriculum and methodology that incorporates any background, former experience, and skill level! I hope you’ll give us a try!

I am a current student at Aranami Dojo, we learn different techniques, katas, and we learn how to spar as well. All these things build your endurance, teaches you self-defense as well as traditional dojo etiquette. Ryan sensei is a very good teacher who is patient, understanding and knowledgable. The karate moves that we learn are taught in Japanese, so it is a perfect fit for those who want to learn the language. It is definitely worth it to study karate here under Ryan sensei, whether it is for self-defense or to broaden your horizon.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Ryan Layman for many years. He is a intelligent and kind individual. Ryan has been trained in Kyokushin Karate by some of the best Kyokushin Karate instructors in the world. As a result he is very skilled in this martial art with excellent technique. Ryan is fluent in Japanese which gives him a unique insight into Karate and the culture of Japan. Ryan is a natural teacher. He is patient and will adapt to the student in order to overcome any challenges. Karate training helps with keeping a healthy mind and body and the benifits of training will extend into all other aspects of your life. I highly recommend the Aranami Dojo to anyone who might be interested in Karate no matter their age. Its never too late to begin your training!

Sensei Ryan is a master who is passionate about teaching karate and is fluent in Japanese, and is able to teach everyone from small children to adults in a way that suits them. My children are learning karate forms, kumite, and etiquette, which I am very grateful for.

Here you can study with a teacher who loves and diligently follows budo! At the recommendation of a friend, I began bringing my son and daughter to class here. Ryan is kind in his instruction to each and every student, teaching in a harmonious environment with the occasional addition of humor. With my kids living abroad, I had given up hope that they would learn traditional budo, so I was overjoyed to provide them this opportunity. Here you can find a warm dojo with the teacher’s character! If you are going to study karate in Hawai’i, I definitely recommend!

My son and I have been attending Aranami Dojo for about a year now, and it has truly been a wonderful experience for both of us. Sensei Ryan is incredibly professional and demonstrates a remarkable level of patience with all his students. His teaching style ensures that everyone feels included in the class, making it a welcoming environment where no one is left out or feels behind. The dojo is a perfect place for anyone interested in learning self-defense or simply looking to get in shape. The classes are well-structured and cater to various skill levels, which has made our journey enjoyable and fulfilling. I wholeheartedly recommend Aranami Dojo to anyone seeking a supportive and skill-building martial arts experience!

My two boys love training with Ryan-sensei! He’s fluent in both Japanese and English, which is perfect for my bilingual children. He’s great with kids, balancing discipline and encouragement through this traditional practice. The class follows Kyokushin-style karate, so there’s real striking involved, making it a great way for kids to build strength and confidence. It’s a very popular class—so I almost don’t want to recommend it too much, or we might lose our spot! But truly, it’s a fantastic experience with a great teacher and great energy.
